napa valley {durant & booth wines}

I can't pinpoint when it started but my appreciation of good wine started not that long ago, surprisingly. While my appreciation of all wine started in college — but we'll save that story for another post. I remember taking day or weekend trips with Francisco to Napa or little towns in wine country and relishing in the serene countryside life and all the goodness that came out of it. We'd leave with a case of wine we've never tried before and while some of it was a splurge it would serve as a reminder of our lovely weekend adventures, at least until the last drop was served.

To this day wine country holds a very special place in my heart, it's picturesque landscape and hot summers have me craving to go back at least one a month, this time of year. Recently Durant & Booth invited me to their stunning new tasting room and partner gourmet grocery store Oakville Grocery for lunch and some wine. I jumped at the chance as I was already in town for another meeting, and as sometimes half the battle is actually getting to Napa Valley. After enjoying a filling craft sandwich and ice cold sangria on their back patio we went in to check out the tasting room. It was spectacular, one of the the more beautiful and interesting tasting rooms I've seen to date — with two floors, a balcony filled with sparkling chandeliers overlooking the prim seating accommodations, vintage taxidermy flanked by bright white-washed walls, and even a private seating area upstairs for wine club members.

Since I didn't get to do a full tasting that day I was ecstatic when Durant & Booth sent me a few bottles to try out at home! An elegant Chardonnay and marvelously blended Cuvee (Zinfandel and Petite Sirah). I enjoyed the white over a Fourth of July picnic ironically enough back in wine country at Lake Sonoma, in the blazing heat it was the perfect chilled beverage to sip on while eating a picnic style lunch in between dipping our toes in the freezing lake. But, as I'm a red girl, the Cuvee was the showstopper in my opinion. I saved it for a special occasion — Sunday dinner with the family. I had the idea to make pizza for everyone, but not before I whipped up a glorious cheese and charcuterie plate as a hearty appetizer. We sat on the balcony overlooking the ocean on one side and the city on the other and took in family time over the perfect red wine. I really need more Durant & Booth in my life, and need to go back to try the full tasting. Promise to report back!
