There are several things high on my list when I look for things that make a city cool. Like when I'm traveling, I'm always scouting out the best restaurants, markets to visit, and boutiques to shop in. Boutiques are at the very nature of what makes a city cool, and we are so lucky here in San Francisco to be littered with some pretty amazing ones. Shopping at big box stores, well-know websites, and seeing the same dress on every last blogger can leave you wondering where all the individual style has actually gone. I love shopping in little-known boutiques where you know the shop girl and the inventory is always top notch, lucky for me, or maybe not so lucky for my wallet, there are some pretty swell ones here in SF -- Le Point, Modern Citizen, Isalis, Hero Shop, and dress

Today I want to share more about my experience at dress, a little shop in the Marina district, off the beaten path, a blink-and-you'll-miss-it-kind-of shop. I first found them in 2015, the main shopkeeper, Elke has been working the store for the last 17 years. Her cool, laid-back German style, bohemian jewelry, and insane knowledge about fashion and brands having been in the industry over the previous 27 years, with her start in high-end residential interior design, is intriguing and also makes it really easy to get along with her.  In two minutes she's sized you up, figured out the brands that would work best with your body type, and flatter you the most. She's essentially your BFF who is also your stylist for any occasion since she knows her stuff and can style you for any event you are not quite sure how to dress for yourself -- meeting the parents, wedding date, first day on the job-- yeah that good. You can tell she really loves her career, she mentioned she enjoys "working directly with women, helping them look and feel their best is a joy and why I come to work every day."

Dress has a wide array of brands and clothing types from casual, to dressy. A few of the brands I love that they carry are Ulla Johnson, Trave, Mother, Chan Luu, Rag & Bone, and IRO. Elke mentioned that they are known for their selection of everyday basics like tees, or cashmere crew necks. I put that statement to the test, and the last time I was in the store I picked up a few basic tees from ATM to try out. I also picked up a Ulla Johnson top, because, hello it's Ulla, and a cool pair of denim from Trave-- a brand I've never heard of. Pretty much everytime you head into dress you are guaranteed to find a cool label you've never heard of, or an interesting local designer because their curated selection is that good. Do yourself a favor and get yourself to dress ASAP and ask for Elke (pronounced El-ka) and tell her Carlina sent you!
