Loving Your Body Even When You Don't Love How You Look

If I'm being totally transparent, this was a tough post to put up. With a birthday in the rearview mirror, the lack of working out as strict as I did when I worked full time (I did it for the stress!), and a new found love for indulging in sour gummy bears assisted in a not-so-summer body, this summer. While I love a good matching workout set, this adorable, albeit unflattering suit gives me so much pause -- do I share the real photos of a girl not comfortable in her second-skin, or in this case her chic Flywheel separates or do I pick the most flattering pictures and not discuss the elephant in the room?

Today, I'd like to think I'm doing a little bit of both. As uncomfortable as I am sharing images of me that I don't fully love, it's a refreshing change of pace for a blogger to talk about the things that we try to shy away from, and for me as a workout obsessed gal, it's sharing images of a less-than-perfect Carlina, if you will. We all have our unglamorous moments, most of us don't share them with the world as openly as bloggers/content creators or influencers do, and I think that is what makes them so sought after- but also it's one of the things leave a person vulnerable to personal attacks and unwarranted comments.  I had a mini panic moment with both my photographer, who said I looked great, and my husband, who also said I looked great. More importantly, he told me, everyone, when placed on a stool, hunched over and wearing an extremely tight set of spandex will most likely also produce similar curves. Yes, he is the best! So here I am muffin top, extra curves and all, take it as you will. For me, it's extra motivation to be kinder to my body whatever that means.

Well, with the onslaught of mini pumpkins, Trader Joes pumpkin everything, chunkier sweaters, and knits in my Instagram feed it seems we have officially transitioned to Fall overnight. While I'm still not ready to let go of Summer (probably because San Francisco didn't get to experience weather above 70 most of the last few months) that doesn't mean I'm opposed to the transition. I mean it already feels like Fall around here, anyways. But, for the sake of this gorgeous polka dot number, the puka shell necklace I had stashed away in my college jewelry box (thank God I save everything, wait but does that make me a hoarder?) and the prettiest skyline in San Francisco-- let's give it up for Summer one more time! Technically Autumn doesn't start until September 23, so I have a few more days -- let me live.

What Fashion Week vs. Style Actually Mean to Me

September is a tricky time of year for fashion, in most seasonal areas you are still experiencing warm climate, appropriate for sundresses, flip-flops (as they coming back in style, trust me!) and still haven't yet put away your basket bags. Then, you get conflicting memos from the fashion set at NYFW in their turtlenecks, cowboy boots, and oversized suit separates -- in 80-degree weather no less!  So what's a girl to do?

I read a quote this morning that made so much sense, now I'm paraphrasing here -- Fashion Week is a place to showcase the new trends. Style is what and how you decide to take from it. -- for me, that meant just because cowboy boots, biker shorts or oversized silhouettes are the newest hottest things happening now doesn't mean to go out and buy all of them. I see these trends as additions to my style, if and when I decide to adorn myself.

Above I'm rocking a very Summery dress, in fact, this little Candide number is a silk wrap dress and perfect for those lingering summer days, but I am still in San Francisco after all, and that meant I couldn't really go out in just the dress. I added accouterments to make this outfit more comfortable and appropriate for our local 60 degree weather days. By adding a suede pair of OTK boots, a beret, and a giant oversized coat. While this look might not scream summer or fall particularity, it's quintessentially me, and that is true style.

The Dress that is Currently Giving me Life

You know that dress that you put on and instantly feel great in? The no-fail dress that you continuously reach into your closet for when you have "nothing to wear"? The dress that makes you look 100% and you already know you will get at least 10 compliments or "who-makes-that-dress" questions on throughout the day? Yep, folks this is MY no-fail, makes me feel fab, go-to Summer/Pre-Fall dress, and it's on major sale right now!

As I've been growing more into my skin, i.e., getting older, I'm gravitating towards less quantity and more quality. That means that I've cut out fast-fashion stores and websites and have been investing my money in pieces that I truly love (and need!) from high-quality designers like this beauty from Rebecca Taylor. It's my very first Rebecca Taylor dress, and I can already tell I'll be trolling the site for years to come and hope to snag a few more pieces. The Fall collection is so good -- think crushed velvet, moody florals, ruffled mocknecks, and all the leopard! Who are some of your favorite designers? Do share I'm always looking for new-to-me designs to lust after. ;)

BTW, for those wondering about the wine, yes it was delicious and from Winc wine club. Get $22 off your first wine shipment order with code "allergictovanilla," because fashion and wine obviously go hand-in-hand.

What do polka dots, tortoise shell, and studs all have in common? Well, they are all some version of dots if you ask me, I think that is why they actually don't look too wild in this getup.  If I was wearing a red dress, blue earrings and yellow shoes we might have a problem, though. The reason this look works is the black and white direction I went with the outfit, I stuck to two main shades and I think each piece compliments the final outfit well.

To keep is less Summer and more Fall I added one of my favorite leather moto jackets and a gorgeous pair of studded booties to feel more seasonal. It's one of my go-to tricks when attempting transitional dressing far into the next month or so. What do you think, would you wear this?

And the love affair continues. Yes, it's Italy again, and yes I'm officially Italian now. ;)
This is the last Italy post for a while, so if you will, let me indulge for a bit before we travel off to France.

In the last segment of our Italian getaway, post-Rome, and Naples we set off South for Minori to the Amalfi Coast. Everyone knows Amalfi and Positano -- the star, or possibly the bane of many depending on your outlook, but we were looking for a little more off-the-beaten-path and ended up blindly selecting Minori. Minori is on the Amalfi coastline, it's a town in the province of Salerno, in the Campania region of south-western Italy.

It was idyllic, relaxing, charming (per the photos) and had one of the most robust uses of lemons in the cuisine, which I loved and still have a habit of incorporating into my summer meals,-- Spaghetti al Limone, anyone?
